Obituary of Joseph Trevor Fletcher
On Saturday, September 12, 1959, the great light of the life of Joseph Trevor Fletcher entered this world, born as the youngest child to his parents, the late Lilian Ann Fletcher and the late George Victor Lalsee in Madeys, St. Patricks, Grenada. More specifically, Trevor, as he was affectionately known by his family, always said that he began being born with his head on September 10, his belly on September 11 and his feet on September 12!
Trevor began his early life of religion and education in Grenada at St. Patrick's Anglican School and Church. He later attended Mac Donald College High School, also in Grenada, West Indies.
On Saturday, February 4, 1978, Trevor immigrated from Grenada to America to be with his mother and siblings. Shortly after that, he moved to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and spent time bonding and working with his late brother, Anslim. Eventually, Trevor returned to the states where he continued to build his life on Ocean Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.
On Saturday, August 21, 2004, Trevor began a journey on a new phase of his life when he joined in holy matrimony to Veronica Elizabeth (née Davis-Yard) at Cornerstone Baptist Church, in Brooklyn, N.Y. As their love and lives blossomed together, they welcomed Joshua Rollins (now age 14), Zachary John (11) and Madison Elizabeth-Ann (8) into the world and enjoyed the blessings of family love together.
Trevor, Veronica, Joshua, Zachary and Madison enjoyed building a lifetime of treasured family memories traveling on road trips, cruises and planes to destinations such as Paris, London, Cuba, St. Lucia, Mexico, St. Thomas, Cartagena, Turks and Caicos, Trinidad and Honduras just to name a few. At home, Trevor enjoyed gardening with Maddie, fixing electronic devices with Zach, home repair projects with Josh and enjoyed quality time building Lego and watching movies with his family during quality time together.
Trevor was a strong, hard-working man with a gifted mind, talented hands and a generous heart. He could build a car, construct a house, design and handcraft all of the furniture in it, then sketch and sew beautiful clothes and draperies, too! Trevor had a unique and amazing way to turn any blank canvas into a work of art. He was someone on whom you could depend to be there to help others in a selfless and generous way. Whether he knew you for years, he met you briefly or you were a stranger, Trevor was always willing to help anyone in need. There are many who will have a tangible part of Trevor in their homes, cars or hearts as his talent will live on in all of the work he's done and lives he's touched.
Along his career path, Trevor worked in several places where he allowed his God-given talents to shine. One of these special places was with Moishe Tress, who became like family for more than 20 years and where some of his talents shined the brightest. Trevor renovated homes, designed furniture projects, worked on renovating a Broadway theatre and maintained houses and apartment complexes along the East Coast of the United States. One of Trevor's most memorable projects was designing and building a three-bunkbed wall unit in Lakewood, N.J.; it was a special father/son activity with Joshua that will be treasured forever.
Trevor dedicated over 17 years of his life to service with the Metropolitan Transit Authority of New York City, working a number of years at the Central Maintenance Facility in East New York, Brooklyn and Maspeth, Queens before transferring to the Flatbush Avenue Depot in Brooklyn, so that he could be close to both his home and his children's school, P.S. 207, all located within walking distance of each other. His MTA brothers and sisters have described him as jovial, friendly, easy to get along with, well-known and well-respected; they acknowledge his sacrifice as a terrible loss to the division and the entire MTA family because he will be deeply missed.
Trevor was dedicated to his own family, encouraging and supporting their participation in church and community events at Cornerstone Baptist Church, Bergen Beach Youth Organization/Millennium Development, Girl and Boy Scouts as well as supporting his MTA brothers and sisters at work and at MTA Family Day celebrations at Six Flags Great Adventure in N.J. and MCU Park in Coney Island, N.Y., for many years. It was a great moment of pride for Trevor when a picture of him with his wife and youngest children were featured in an edition of the MTA Local 100 Newsletter that covered the 2014 Family Day. Trevor was excited to expand his family's enjoyment of this event when in 2018, he and Veronica included his grandchildren, Cheyanne and Chayse, for wonderful MTA Family Day fun with Josh, Zach and Maddie.
Trevor sacrificed himself for the city of New York while working during the pandemic and on Saturday, April 11, 2020, at 8:03 p.m., he succumbed to the coronavirus at Brookdale Hospital. The MTA is the circulatory system through which New York City's nutrients, in the form of people, move throughout the boroughs, and Joseph Trevor Fletcher selflessly served his family and city with his last heartbeats as a true hero.
Joseph Trevor Fletcher's absence from our midst will be deeply felt, but his God, who is also our God, will sustain and keep us strong as we bow humbly to His Divine Will.
