Obituary of Hazel Mack
Hazel Geraldine Mack was born on July 4, 1930 in Southern Pines, NC. She is preceded in death by her husband Nathaniel Mack, mother Ethel Mae Rembert, father Melvin Rembert, brothers Maryland and Ronald and several half siblings. She migrated to NY at a young age along with four generations of family where they resided in Corona, NY. She moved to Springfield Gardens with her husband and in 1971 they built the home of their dreams in Amityville, NY. She lived a full life of 90 years until she could no longer live the way she wanted anymore. She passed on September 15, 2020.
Hazel attended public schools in Corona, and graduated early from Newtown HS. She worked as a clerk typist for the federal government in NYC, a teacher's assistant at Amityville Junior High School and retired as a clerk typist from Suffolk County in 2000.
Hazel met and married the love of her life, Nathaniel in 1951. Together they had three children; Gerald (Paula), Karen and Russell; six grandchildren Nicole, Bryce, Ronald, Justyn, Jasmine and Danielle and three great-grandchildren Simone, Jalen and Nadine.
Hazel was the definition of "Mom" to those she birthed and the many that stayed at the house. Anyone that went to the house was welcomed by a home cooked meal. She was such a great cook that she compiled her recipes in a fully indexed cookbook. Her calm nature was contagious, laughter infectious and food delicious. Anyone who entered left refreshed.
Hazel had many hobbies. She loved gardening and would often be found planting and weeding her gardens in good weather. She was an avid reader and loved romance stories. Any book with a damsel in distress and a shirtless man rescuing her on the cover she read. The family read these books to her in her final days.
Hazel also loved being together with her friends. She joined the Lindenhurst Homemakers group where she crocheted hats or blankets for various charities. She found lots of comradery with the ladies. They often celebrated birthdays or just days that end in "y". Although many thought she was always at home cooking, she could be found out with friends enjoying jazz concerts at the church, taking the bus to plays in Manhattan or driving herself to Costco even during COVID.
Hazel is survived by her children Gerald (Paula), Karen, and Russell; six grandchildren Nicole, Bryce, Ronald, Justyn, Jasmine and Danielle; three great-grandchildren Simone, Jalen and Nadine; half-sister Pam, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
