Obituary of William Smith

William (Sal) Smith the baby boy of five children born to the late William and Ruth Smith. William was born in Montgomery, Alabama on July 5, 1944, he was predeceased by his brother Otis James and Sisters Anna Mae, and Dorothy Louise. He attended elementary, and junior high school in Montgomery, Al. He graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1963. After graduation Sal moved to the Bronx, New York. He joined the military in 1965 where he earned expert marksmen. He was discharged in 1967 from the United States Army. He came to Long Island to live with family and was employed by Northport Veterans Hospital. In 1968 he spotted his wife walking in the tunnels of the hospital. He instantly knew she was his bride and fifty-one years later he knew he had made the right choice. On March 29, 1969, William Smith and Claretha L. Henley joined together in matrimony as one. This union blessed them with two wonderful sons William Basil (Barteise) and Jason Marvin (Big J. Money). They both are mirrors of their father, and a special daughter Leanna. William was known throughout the neighborhood as Mr. Smith. He engaged all the young Boys and young Men in sports and its history. He was well versed in the Negro leagues in all sports. He was just a sport buff! His other sport was as a fisherman. You could find him in Massachusetts, Hilton Head, S.C, and on the east end of Long Island. He was also known for his grilling. The youth always showed up for his infamous (Smitty Burgers). Still today they come for his "Smitty Burgers". He was known as good man known to all who encountered him. He was a people's person. William was the proud grandfather of four beautiful and loyal grandchildren Aniya Mecca, Assata Aquila, Jason Marvin (JJ), Gabriella Sybil. And two special grands Taniyah Roberta, and Savannah Nicole. He served God and was a true a believer and scholar of the bible. He leaves to mourn to his loving wife Claretha L, two sons Basil (Dana) and Jason (Gerilyn), sister Shirley, special daughter Leanna, grandchildren, Aunt Delois, sister-in-law Fredia L. Henley, brother in laws Solomon (Linda) and Michael Henley, a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. May my husband William Smith, Jr. walk in the light forever more. We will always love you.
