Obituary of Gladys N. Scott-Battle
Gladys Natalie Scott Battle was born on September 16, 1926 to Dudley Fairfax Scott and Bessie May Mitchell Scott (deceased) in Cambridge, MA. Gladys was the youngest child born of that union and she was spoiled by her parents and her two older brothers, Robert Mitchell and Dudley Everett (now deceased).
After the death of her mother, Gladys was sent to live with relatives in North Carolina. Her cousin said, "She was gorgeous with big eyes and that's when she earned the nickname "Moon". Gladys was extremely friendly and outgoing. She graduated from North Hampton County Training High School in NC and shortly after that she joined her brother Bobby and her father in New York.
In 1954, Gladys married James Battle, Jr. That union was blessed with a set of twins, James, III and Jameel. As the boys got older Gladys decided to return to school, earning both her Bachelor's degree from Fordham University as well as her Master's degree in Social Work from Columbia University.
Gladys built a career as a teacher and a social worker in the New York City Public School system and ultimately ended up retiring as a Liaison at an alternative school in the Bronx. She was an avid reader and traveler. Throughout her years she traveled all over Europe, Canada and many other places.
Gladys was all about family! And she LOVED her Native American heritage - her favorite time was visiting NC and also going to various pow-wow's. She derived great pleasure talking about the history of the family. She doted on her children, grandchildren and many family members and close family friends.
She leaves to mourn James Battle, Jr., her three sons, Dr. Gregory Scott (deceased), James Battle, III and Jameel Battle, her daughters- in-law, Lenore Battle, Adriana Battle, Kim Scott-Klinger, and Joan Scott, her grandchildren, Ashley Scott, Blair Scott, Jonathan Scott, James Battle IV, Maya Battle and Gillian Scott, her sisters, Nettie Washington, Barbara Scott (deceased), and Deirdre Scott. Her brother Robert "Karanga" Dukes (deceased), her sisters -in-law, Genevieve Scott, Vera Battle and Delores Battle (deceased), her brothers-in-law, Willie Washington and Benjamin Battle, her nieces, Cheryl, Linda, Patricia and Crystal and a host of family, colleagues and friends and her beloved dog, Mowghli.
