Obituary of Willie Lee Sledge

Willie Lee Sledge, lovingly known as "Will", the son of the late Willie Thomas Sledge and Lennie Irene Sledge was born on May 11, 1939 in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. He departed this earthly life on January 5, 2014 after a brief illness. He attended the public school system in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. In 1955, he moved with his family to New York City where he continued his education at Boys High School in Brooklyn, New York. Willie served in the United States Army from 1958 and was honorably discharged in 1962. He was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Shirley Mack in 1962. To this union 2 daughters were born; Melerez & Tina Sledge. Willie worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York City as a bank supervisor for over 25 years after which he decided to retire early. His love for children led him to work as a bus driver for Acme Bus Corporation until September 2013. Willie was a devout Christian and a God-fearing man. He was a member of Long Island Family Church where he attended regularly and he had a profound devotion for Gospel music. He was a great conversationalist and would discuss the Word to anyone that would listen. He touched many lives with his selfless and countless acts of kindness, always giving and never expecting any favors in return. He loved to travel and most importantly spend time with his family and love ones, no matter what holiday. Willie's four siblings proceeded him in death. He leaves to cherish loving memories: his wife Shirley Sledge, two daughters, Melerez & Tina Sledge; one granddaughter, Danasia Sledge and one great-grandson Mason, all of Amityville, NY. 2 sister in laws; Viola Rivers of Brooklyn, NY; Eunice Lucas and his special brother-in-law Charles Lucas of Amityville, NY; one aunt Stella Lashley of Queens, NY and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
