Obituary of John Cleveland Carter

John came to the Wyandanch UFSD in 1983 as Head of security. Mr. Carter used all the training he learned from the Military and Police Force to successfully recruit and train his security staff to become professionals. As head of security, John was there to help students, teachers and support staff. He developed a rapport with the Wyandanch School District and the Suffolk County Police Department. Before "Unit One" (as his staff called him) left, he told his Staff to always be professional. Following his years as Director of Wyandanch he moved on to be head of security at Uniondale school District. It seems that John just couldn't get away from law enforcement. As founder of the Suffolk County Police Athletic Boxing League 1971, John is credited with working with and molding troubled youth through the boxing program. He always made sure the program was accessible to all children that wanted to join, even if he had to go to their homes to pick them up. In 2007 he received the George Washington Mentoring Award from the Daily News Charities, which sponsors the Golden Gloves. He also collaborated with other community advocates to develop the Wyandanch Midget Football League. John's dedication to the Wyandanch Community showed young men and women how to use their talents to get what they wanted out of life. Even though John retired in 1992, he remained active with PAL boxing and on some Sundays you could catch him down at the Wyandanch Park watching the youth playing football. John leaves to cherish his memories, his mother Ruth Anderson Carter, Wife Judy Carter, children Craig, John Jr.(Nicole) and his precious daughter Kisha. His three granddaughters, Brittany Roberts (Louis), Danielle Howard , Damaris Carter and nephew Jerry Brown. His sisters Constance Carter-England (Liston), Pauline Tucker (Gerald), Saundra Carter, Diane Smith (Paul), and Brother Robert Carter and a host of Nieces and Nephews.
