Obituary of Alton K. Mason

There was a beautiful baby boy born to the late Rev. John B. and Edna Winford Mason in Davie County, North Carolina. His parents named him Alton Kenneth Mason. He was the eleventh of fourteen children born to JB and Edna. He grew into a handsome young boy. Alton accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at the age of eight years and was baptized by his pastor the late Rev. R.M. Pitts at the Cedar Grove Baptist Church. He loved Sunday school and singing in the choir at his home church. He was raised with his siblings, nieces and nephews in a very loving and strict home and you were required to attend church each Sunday. Alton graduated from Davie County Training school in 1959 and joined the US Army, and served two years, he was a great marksman and chef. After his honorable discharge, he left NC to live in New York with his older brothers. He joined his brother the late Rev. Thomas Mason's church and enjoyed his fellowship with the members. While at New Hope Baptist, his love for Jesus and his faith increased. He met and married his love Delia Grounds and to this union two beautiful daughters were born, Brooke and Courtney whom he fondly called Brookie and Courtie. Alton was employed by the New York Transit Authority for over twenty-five years, where he took his job serious and enjoyed meeting and talking with his passengers on a daily basis. He often shared stories of the passengers and friends that he met on his daily bus route. He is preceded in death by the following siblings: Rev. John B. Mason III, Rev. Thomas F. Mason, Nannie Nixon, Pansy Gooden and Charlene Gillom.
